The Weekly Wrap

A round up of all the action for the Darley stallions over the past week
Dawn delivers

Dawn Approach continued his superb start to the new year at the weekend, when two of his first winners of 2018 added second straight wins to their records.

Court House, who notched his first win just over two weeks ago, followed up with an even more impressive victory at Lingfield on Saturday, 20 January, winning over a mile by almost four lengths.

The John Gosden-trained colt was slowly away, but once the field began to quicken from home, he picked up superbly to win easily. There may well be better yet to come for this promising performer, who has since been allotted a Timeform rating of 96 – the highest mark for a three-year-old in the UK or Ireland so far this year.

Also at Lingfield, Morning Has Broken earned herself an entry for the 1,000 Guineas with a dominant victory in the one-mile fillies’ novice.

David Elsworth’s charge broke her maiden on Thursday, 6 January by no fewer than six lengths and was in the clear once again on Saturday.

A day earlier, Dawn Approach added another new winner when Viridorix (trained by Jean-Claude Rouget) was victorious at Cagnes-sur-Mer, while on Thursday, 18 January, the Irish-bred filly Sunshine Mist was victorious over six furlongs at Kenilworth, South Africa, despite carrying the same weight as horses approximately six months older than her.

French stallions on parade

On Sunday, 21 January, Haras du Logis opened its doors to breeders as part of La Route des Etalons.

Nine stallions were on show, including new recruit and French Champion juvenile Ultra, who now stands alongside his own sire Manduro.

Also parading was another Champion two-year-old in Sidestep, plus young stallions Masterstroke, Bow Creek and Hunter’s Light, together with established sires Authorized, Rio de la Plata and Slickly.

Another excellent result for Exceed

We may be just three weeks into the new year, but Exceed And Excel has already sired a Stakes winner in both hemispheres, courtesy of Heavy Metal (winner of the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R1 on the opening night of the Dubai World Cup Carnival) and on Saturday, Excelleration.

Three-year-old filly Excelleration landed the Listed Gore Guineas by two lengths, despite being hampered early on. She will now aim for a Guineas double, with the Dunedin Guineas early next month cited as her next target.

Exceed And Excel also recorded his second Carnival winner on Thursday, 18 January, when Godolphin’s Salsabeel ran out the ready victor of the one-mile handicap at Meydan.

Lightning strikes at Meydan

Also at Meydan last Thursday, well-bred Shamardal filly Winter Lightning broke her maiden in tenacious style, outbattling previous winner Rayya in a thrilling finish to win the UAE 1,000 Guineas Trial, with the pair some 10 lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

A full sister to G2 May Hill Stakes winner and G1 Fillies’ Mile and 1,000 Guineas third Ihtimal (who also won the UAE 1,000 Guineas and Oaks), Winter Lightning is also a half-sister to Helmet’s multiple G1 winner Thunder Snow.

Winter Lightning will now head for the UAE 1,000 Guineas on Thursday, 8 February.
