The Weekly Wrap

A round up of all the action for the Darley stallions over the past week
Stunning Sprint victory

Exceed And Excel’s ultra-quick son Mr Stunning cemented his position as Hong Kong’s leading sprinter on Sunday, 10 December when disposing of his rivals in the G1 Hong Kong Sprint. Coming into the race on the back of a brace of G2 victories, he cruised through the six-furlong contest before holding on well in the final furlong to record a first G1 triumph. The winner of ten of his 16 starts, he now has career earnings north of €3,000,000, making him Exceed And Excel’s all-time leading money winner.

Standing this coming season at a fee of €50,000 Oct 1, Special Live Foal, Exceed And Excel has enjoyed another marvellous year. The sire of 41 Stakes performers in 2017, which is only beaten by three other European stallions, his four European-bred Stakes-winning juveniles are led by G2 Lowther heroine Threading and G2 Mill Reef winner James Garfield.

Precious win for Pounamu

Pounamu, an Australian-bred son of Authorized, landed his biggest victory of his career on Saturday, 9 December, when taking his first G1 in the Kingston Town Classic at Ascot in Western Australia. Trained by the popular Alan Mathews, the grey came from the rear to fly down the outside to get up close to the line. The winner of nine career victories, he had previously won the G3 Asian Beau Stakes and Listed Detonator Stakes over the same course.

Authorized, who stands in France at Haras du Logis for a fee of €12,000 Oct 1, SLF, has now sired five top-flight winners. The European-bred dual Australian scorer Hartnell heads his runners with top performing fillies Ambivalent and Seal Of Approval and the G1 Spring Champion Stakes hero, and New Zealand stallion Complacent completing the quintuplet.

Fool me twice

Trap For Fools won his second successive Stakes race on Saturday, 9 December when taking the Listed Towton Cup at Ascot. The highly progressive son of Poet’s Voice has now landed seven of his last eight starts including a Stakes victory in the Tattersall’s Cup in late November. The top Western Australian stayer now heads to the G2 Perth Cup.

He is one of eight Stakes winners for his young sire this season including fellow Australian G2 sprint winner Viridine, German Classic winner Poetic Dream, the multiple G1 Champion Stakes-placed Poetic Word and the Italian 1,000 Guineas heroine Mi Raccomando. Poet’s Voice will stand in 2018 at a fee of £6,000.

Oh what a night

Another son of Dubawi to be making waves is Night Of Thunder, whose first-crop foals have been going through the ring over the past few weeks. All four of his foals offered at Arqana found new homes with Jamie Railton paying €75,000 for a son of the Cape Cross mare Sparkling Smile.

This comes off the back of an excellent Tattersalls sale when Jamie Railton again signed for the top lot, a 200,000gns colt out of Travel, with two further purchases making 100,000gns or higher. The 2,000 Guineas hero will be standing in the UK for the first time in 2018 at a fee of £15,000 Oct 1, SLF.

Open success

Dalham Hall Stud opened its doors for six consecutive days during the Tattersalls December Sales with over 600 visitors coming to view the 15 stallions on show.

The four new British and Irish stallions were on parade, with Royal Ascot G1-winning sprinter Profitable and Champion miler Ribchester coming over from Ireland to show alongside the Dalham new boys Barney Roy and Postponed (pictured). Despite the arctic conditions everything was a success and look out for news in the New Year for our next open house, where our returning shuttle stallions will be available to be viewed.
