Vasy closed stoutly under jockey Tyler Gaffalione to take the Listed Colonel Liam Stakes by a determined neck at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, 28 Feb.
The three-year-old son of Space Blues, who broke his maiden in his previous start, became a first-time Stakes winner with the victory.
Vasy rated behind pacesetter I C Light, who set fractions of :22.86 and :46.81 through the first half-mile while pressed by Honey Dutch. I C Light showed the way into the stretch before being overtaken by Honey Dutch, who appeared to be on his way to victory under Irad Ortiz Jr. in mid-stretch. Taken off the rail, Vasy made a late move nearing the wire to get up in time to prevail by a neck.
Bred in Ireland by Gary Mullins, Vasy is out of the mare Beautiful Ending, a winning daughter of Exceed And Excel. Vasy is a half brother to Group Stakes-placed Story of Light (Dark Angel), and hails from the immediate family of Graded/Group Stakes winners Nayyir, Sky Hunter, and Highest.
Space Blues enjoyed a tremendous first year with his runners in 2025, siring 24 individual winners headed by G1 Phoenix Stakes hero Power Blue – Timeform’s highest-rated juvenile by a first-season sire last year.
His strike rate of 7% Group horses to runners last year can only be bettered by St Mark’s Basilica (who stands at €40,000) among Irish stallions standing at €100,000 or less.
Space Blues stands at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €15,000, Oct 1, SLF.
