Night Of Thunder colt wins G1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes

Gewan the highlight of a big race double for the sire at Newmarket

Night Of Thunder’s remarkable year got even better when he landed a brilliant juvenile Group-race double at Newmarket, as his son Hankelow took the G3 Autumn Stakes before Gewan produced an excellent performance to land the G1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes on Saturday, 11 October.

Making just his fourth start, Gewan was ridden handily throughout the G1 contest and picked up readily when asked for his effort two furlongs from home, going clear of Gstaad in second and fellow Night Of Thunder colt Distant Storm in third. Gewan had also captured the G3 Acomb Stakes on just his second start earlier in the season.

Bred by Overbury Stallions Ltd and Dukes Stud, Gewan is out of the Stakes-placed Lethal Force mare Grey Mystere and hails from the family of G1 winner Coquerelle.

Just an hour earlier, Night Of Thunder’s juvenile colt Hankelow had landed the G3 Autumn Stakes on only his third start over a mile.
Making all the running, the Karl Burke-trained two-year-old showed a willing attitude to hold off all challengers and win by a length.

Bred by George Kent, Hankelow was a 750,000gns yearling purchase. He is out of the Lawman mare Sagaciously, a half-sister to the dam of G1 winners Wise Approach and exciting young Darley stallion Perfect Power.

Night Of Thunder has enjoyed an exceptional season and currently sits clear at the top of the UK and Ireland sires’ championship. His four-year-old son Ombudsman has already recorded victories in the G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and G1 Juddmonte International and could cap a brilliant year in next weekend’s G1 Champion Stakes at Ascot.
