Golden Horn off the mark in style at Haydock

West End Girl makes a successful debut to become her sire’s first winner

Golden Horn, the 2015 Horse of the Year and winner of the Derby, the Eclipse, the Irish Champion and the Arc, is now officially a sire, following his daughter West End Girl’s win at Haydock on Friday, 5 July.

Held up during the early stages of the seven-furlong contest under Franny Norton, the Mark Johnston-trained filly took the lead inside the final furlong and despite showing some signs of greenness, stayed on very strongly close to home to win by a length and a quarter.

West End Girl was bred by Car Colston Hall Stud and is out of the winning Dansli mare Free Rein, a half sister to G1 winner Reckless Abandon, plus New Approach’s G2 performer Best Approach. She is also from the family of G1 winners Ticker Tape and Brando.

Golden Horn broke the track record on his only start at two , before carrying all before him as a three-year-old. He has been rewarded with high quality books of mares since his retirement to Dalham Hall Stud.
