Exceed And Excel records his 59th Stakes winner

Cathay Lady fights back to give Darley sires a one-two-three finish in the Belle of The Turf Stakes

Jumping away well from the barriers, the John Sargent-trained Exceed And Excel mare Cathay Lady went forward to take up the running, looking to extend her winning sequence to four.

Rated well in front by jockey Blake Shinn, the mare toughed it out right to the line to become the 59th Stakes winner for her sire, defeating Lonhro mare Babel by a head with Shamardal mare Shamardani flashing home from the rear of the field to take third.

Bred by Kia Ora Stud, Cathay Lady is out of the Sindaar mare Kerimba, an unraced half-sister to the G3 winner Kerkana (the dam of Listed winner Kermiyana). Kia Ora Stud as agent will offer a full-sister to Cathay Lady as lot 455 at the Inglis Premier yearling sale in March.

The sire of 59 Stakes winners internationally including G1 winners Helmet, Excelebration, Reward For Effort and Margot Did, Exceed And Excel will stand the forthcoming breeding season at Dalham Hall at a fee of £35,000, while his triple G1-winning son Helmet will stand his debut season at €10,000.
