First-season sire Dubawi (pictured) recorded his first Black type winner on 14 August, when Godolphin filly Sand Vixen led home a 1-2-3 for the Darley stallions in the Listed St Hugh’s Stakes at Newbury.
Breaking smartly from the stalls, Sand Vixen was always in touch and running on well in the closing stages of the five-furlong contest, got up to beat Shamandar (Exceed And Excel) by a nose. Above Limits, also by Exceed And Excel put up a creditable performance to take third place.
Sand Vixen, who was third in the G3 Princess Margaret Stakes on her last start, could now be aimed at the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes.
Also on Friday, Iron Velvet became Dubawi's 15th winner, powering home to take the competitive six-furlong nursery at Catterick. Trained by Mark Johnston and owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, he is out of the unraced Deputy Minister mare Not For Turning, a half-sister to G1 Kentucky Oaks winner Pike Place Dancer.
Dubawi, who is currently joint-leading first-season sire in Europe by number of winners, has recorded no fewer than five new winners in the past fortnight alone. He is also sire of the highly promising Poet’s Voice, whose ten-length romp at Newmarket earned him a Timeform rating of 108p.
Exceed And Excel, leading sire of two-year-olds in Great Britain and Ireland, has now sired ten Black type performers in the northern hemisphere this year, including Listed winner Nideeb.
