Double honours for Dubawi at Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association awards

Darley flagbearer is leading British-based sire by earnings and strike rate

Dubawi has been awarded the BBA Silver Cigar Box as leading British-based stallion by earnings for a record-extending tenth time, as announced by the TBA on Wednesday, 29 January.

He also regained the British EBF Barleythorpe Stud Silver Cup, which is awarded for winner to runner strike rate, with his 73 winners from 149 runners returning at 48.99% strike rate.

Dubawi enjoyed yet another outstanding year in 2024, becoming the most successful sire in the 2,000 Guineas since the Pattern began, when Notable Speech became his fourth winner of the Classic.

He was also responsible for the first two home in the Oaks, while Rebel’s Romance flew the flag for his sire across the globe with G1 victories in Dubai, Hong Kong, Germany and the US.

Dubawi added yet more juvenile Group winners in 2024, including G1 colts Ancient Truth and Delacroix – who won the same G3 as Dubawi’s future Horse of the Year (and best yet) Ghaiyyath. His 2024 yearling average, £830k, is his highest since 2016.

Godolphin was also announced as the winner of the Queen’s Silver Cup as leading British-based flat breeder.

This was thanks in no small part to the aforementioned Notable Speech, who went on to land the G1 Sussex Stakes after his Guineas victory.

Shadow Of Light (a three-parts brother to promising young sire Earthlight) concluded the flat season in magnificent style when annexing the G1 Middle Park and G1 Dewhurst.

Sam Bullard, Director of Stallions, said, “Everyone at Godolphin is delighted that the Queen’s Silver Cup is heading back to Dalham Hall Stud.

“2024 was a tremendous year for both Team Godolphin and the Darley stallions and it is very fitting that Notable Speech, by our flagbearer Dubawi, has contributed to both the leading breeder award and to Dubawi’s double success.

“Dubawi continues to excel at the highest level and is now being challenged by his own sons as the future Champions in waiting. We are incredibly fortunate to have him.”
