Masar

Royal Ascot beckons for son of New Approach after an impressive debut win at Goodwood

New Approach looks to have another potential star on his hands after his juvenile son Masar made a perfect winning introduction at Goodwood.

In a race won last year by subsequent Group winner Yalta (Exceeed And Excel), the Charlie Appleby-trained colt showed his inexperience from the stalls, trailing the field in the six-furlong contest. Coming back on the bridle at halfway, he had to negotiate a wall of horses in front of him but when the gap came he quickened impressively to catch the fellow debutant Invincible Army, the pair pulling over three lengths clear.

Royal Ascot is now on the agenda with the Chesham Stakes the most likely option. He will attempt to emulate his paternal half-brother Tha'Ir's victory in 2012, the same season as New Approach sired the winners of the Coventry Stakes (Dawn Approach) and Albany Stakes (Newfangled).

A Godolphin-homebred, Masar hails from one of the best families in the studbook. His dam if the Champion racemare Khawlah (Cape Cross), winner of the UAE Derby and Oaks, and third dam the multiple Classic-placed Melikah, who is the dam of record-breaking Masterstroke and Irish Group winner Moonlight Magic. Melikah is a daughter of the great Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea who has prduced two of the all time greats in Galileo and Sea The Stars. Khawlah also has a Shamardal yearling colt and has been tested in foal to Dubawi this season.
