Son of Dubawi wins his second Group race of the season

Universal, a four-year-old son of Dubawi, won his second Group race of the year when showing his customary game qualities in landing the G2 Jockey Club Stakes over a mile-and-a-half at Newmarket. Taken to the front early under jockey Joe Fanning, he set his own pace until challenged and headed three out by Dandino, where he rallied gamely to re-take the lead in the final furlong to win going away by a neck.

Bred by Grangecon Stud and sold as a yearling for €160,000, he is out of the Giant's Causeway mare Winesong, who also has a full-brother yearling to Universal. Winesong is a half-sister to four Stakes performers including G1-winning juvenile filly Seazun.

Dubawi, who stands this season for £75,000 Oct 1st SLF, has sired 11 Stakes winners in 2013 including Dubai G1 scorer Hunter's Light, G1-winning South African juvenile Willow Magic, Hong Kong Derby winner Akeed Mofeed, fellow local Hong Kong G1 winner Lucky Nine, and Classic trial hero Fort Knox. Dubawi stands alongside his Queen Elizabeth II Stakes-winning son Poet's Voice at Dalham Hall Stud, who covers at a fee of £12,000.
