Tenth Stakes winner of 2012 for Dubawi

Aljamaaheer wins the King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket to become his sire’s second Black type winner of the day

Dubawi has, even by his own exceptional standards, been enjoying a purple patch of late and this continued on Saturday when his well-regarded son Aljamaaheer landed the Listed Charles II Stakes, run over seven furlongs at Newmarket.

Never far from the pace, the Roger Varian-trained colt was switched left two furlongs from home and taking the lead inside the final furlong, ran on well to win by a length and a half from favourite The Nile.

A winner on his racecourse debut last October, Aljamaaheer did not find the soft ground to his liking when fourth on his seasonal reappearance. Roger Varian indicated after the race that a trip to Royal Ascot may now be on the cards, for a possible tilt at the Jersey Stakes.

Bred by Corrin Stud and now running in the colours of Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum, Aljamaaheer is out of the winning Rainbow Quest mare Kelly Nicole, also dam of another Black type performer in Tinkertown and from the family of G1 winners Moonstone and Cerulean Sky.

Dubawi has now sired ten individual Stakes winners so far this year, including today’s G3 winner in Australia Tiger Tees, Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso, and G2 winner Al Kazeem.
