Spice Route lands G2 Elkhorn Stakes

Son of King's Best records his second Graded Stakes win with a two-length victory at Keeneland

King's Best’s son Spice Route has enjoyed a successful spell since relocating to the United States last year and the five-year-old took his second Graded Stakes contest on 24 April when landing the G2 Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland.

Settled off the pace, Spice Route took the lead in the home straight and ran on well to win the one-and-a-half mile contest by two lengths. Already G1-placed when second in last year’s Canadian International, Spice Route won the G3 Tropical Turf Handicap at Calder racecourse last December and was twice placed in Listed company when trained in the UK by Michael Bell.

Bred by Usk Valley Stud, he is out of the G1-winning mare Zanzibar (In The Wings) who has a two-year-old colt by Tiger Hill and a yearling filly by Halling.

King’s Best, who stands at Haras du Logis, sired 16 Black type performers in 2008 – including Godolphin’s G1 Lockinge Stakes winner Creachadoir. He has sired three Black type winners and a further three Black type performers so far this year.
