Space Blues storms to G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest glory

Progressive son of Dubawi secures a first G1 win at Deauville

Space Blues, a four-year-old son of Dubawi, secured a first win at G1 level when taking the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Sunday, 9 August. Following a career-best taking the G2 Lennox Stakes just under a fortnight previously, the progressive colt lined up in a hot edition of the six-and-a-half furlong contest alongside Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde, dual G1 sprint winner Hello Youmzain and Godolphin’s unbeaten dual G1 victor Earthlight. Held towards the rear under a confident ride from jockey William Buick, Space Blues was shaken up in the final two furlongs, unleashing a devastating turn of foot to secure a first G1 victory by three-quarters of a length.

A Godolphin homebred, Space Blues is a half-brother to the G2-winning Shuruq, dam of American G1 performer Antoinette. He is the sixth foal from the G2 seven furlong winner Miss Lucifer (Noverre), herself a half-sister to the G3-winning Legend Maker, dam of G1 1000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters. This is the family of G1 winner Chachamaidee and the direct female family of Sunbittern, 4th dam of Space Blues’ own sire Dubawi.

Space Blues is the 43rd individual G1 winner for his outstanding sire Dubawi, who’s G1 winners this season also include G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes victor Lord North and the hugely impressive G1 Eclipse hero Ghaiyyath. He is also the sire of the G2-winning juvenile and one of the best rated two-year-old colts in Europe in Master Of The Seas. Dubawi has made a name for himself as a sire of sires with his classic-winning son Night Of Thunder making an astonishing start at stud, with his progeny including this season’s G2 Dante Stakes hero Thunderous.
