Rebel's Romance claims second G1 of the year in Germany

Dubawi's son runs out the easy winner of the Preis von Europa

Dubawi’s four-year-old son, Rebel’s Romance, gained his second successive G1 success of 2022 on Sunday, 25 September with an emphatic victory in the Preis von Europa at Cologne, Germany.

Rebel’s Romance, who is trained by Charlie Appleby, was held up towards the rear of the field by William Buick in the 2400m contest, entering the straight the gelding was switched for a clear run up the inside rail, he was ridden out to lead in the closing stages and went on to win by a comfortable three-quarters of a length from Sammarco back in second.

Owned by Godolphin, Rebel’s Romance is now the winner of seven races.  He remains unbeaten in Europe this season, having won the Listed Fred Archer Stakes in June, he then went on to win the G3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood before heading to Germany two weeks later where he scored on his first try at the highest level in the Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten. He could now head to the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland in November.

Rebel’s Romance is out of the Stakes-placed mare Minidress (Street Cry), herself a half-sister to G3-winner Volcanic Sky. She is the dam of three winners and is the daughter of G1 Oaks-placed mare Short Skirt.

Dubawi is having an exceptional season. Among the 37 Stakes winners he has sired seven of those have won at the highest level including last weekend’s Woodbine Mile victor Modern Games who also won the G1 French 2,000 Guineas, Coroebus who was successful in the G1 2,000 Guineas and G1 St Leger hero Eldar Eldarov.
