Opinion Poll lands the Lonsdale Cup

Son of Halling becomes the second G2 winner in as many days for the Darley stallions when victorious at York; Crown Prosecutor (Exceed And Excel) is second in the Gimcrack

Less than 24 hours after Rewilding (Tiger Hill) ran out the hugely impressive winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes, another Darley-sired runner was victorious in a G2 contest on the Knavesmire when Halling's Opinion Poll put up a gutsy performance to win the Lonsdale Cup.

Held up towards the rear under Frankie Dettori, the four-year-old colt (who is trained by Michael Jarvis) began to make headway three furlongs from home and stayed on impressively to record a half-length victory.

This was Opinion Poll's third Black type win, having landed the Listed Further Flight Stakes and Prix la Moskowa (also a Listed contest) earlier this year.

Bred by Darley, Opinion Poll is out of the G2-placed Shirley Heights mare Ahead, a half-sister to QEII Stakes winner Markofdistinction and a full sister to Criquette, herself dam of Godolphin's Ribblesdale Stakes winner Flying Cloud (who is by Darley Japan stallion Storming Home).

Halling has now sired 22 individual Group winners, including 2010 G1-winning duo Cavalryman and Cutlass Bay.

Also on Wednesday, two-year-old Exceed And Excel colt Crown Prosecutor put up a tremendous performance to take second in the G2 Gimcrack Stakes, beaten less than a length by the winner Approve.
