New winner for Rio de la Plata

Ocean Air wins first time out to become the fifth successful runner for his first-season sire

Two-year-old colt Ocean Air (Rio de la Plata) broke his maiden at the first time of asking on 25 August, landing the seven-furlong maiden at Leicester.

Slowly away under Martin Harley, James Tate’s charge was held up in last place early on but travelled well throughout. Making headway with a furlong left to run, he quickened impressively once a clear path opened up and crossed the line a head in front of the well-fancied Claire’s Secret.

Ocean Air was bred by Richard Tucker and is the second winner out of the winning mare Silver Miss, a half-sister to the dam of multiple G2 winner and G1 placer Silver Pond.

Rio de la Plata was crowned Champion juvenile in France following his victory in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. He went on to two further successes at the highest level and was G1 placed on no fewer than seven occasions.
