New London much the best in G3 Gordon Stakes

Son of Dubawi throws himself into St Leger contention with impressive Goodwood win

Dubawi’s three-year-old son New London added a well-deserved first Group win to his record in fine style on Thursday, 28 July with a convincing victory in the G3 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood.

Settled in mid division under William Buick, New London began to quicken with three furlongs left to run and taking the lead a furlong from home, cruised clear to win by a length and three quarters.

Territories’ Derby second Hoo Ya Mal put up another solid performance to finish a close third.

Charlie Appleby’s charge has never finished out of the first two in five starts and now has four victories to his name including an impressive win on Newmarket’s July course earlier this month. He holds an entry in next month’s G1 St Leger, for which he is now favourite.

Godolphin's previous winner of this race is none other than Cross Counter (Teofilo), who went on to win the G1 Melbourne Cup.

New London is out of the Manduro mare Bright Beacon, also dam of Dubawi’s G2 performer and Stakes winner Al Dabaran. She is a three-parts sister to the dam of Waldgeist and a half sister to Masked Marvel.

Dubawi has now sired 19 individual Group winners in 2022, five of whom have won at G1 level. They are headed by 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes Coroebus.
