New Classic contender for Dubawi

Makfi runs out the easy winner of the G3 Prix Djebel: next stop the 2,000 Guineas

Leading first-season sire Dubawi has enjoyed an outstanding start to 2010, siring no fewer than 22 winners already this year.

Three-year-old colt Makfi became his sire’s eighth winner in the past week, throwing himself into Classic contention in the process, when running out the easy winner of the G3 Prix Djebel at Maisons-Laffitte.

Settled off the pace, the Mikel Delzangles-trained colt quickened impressively once entering the final two furlongs and taking the lead a furlong from home, eased clear of his rivals to win the seven-furlong contest by three lengths.

Makfi maintained his unbeaten record with today’s victory, having won on his only start at two. He is now likely to head for the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas), although he also holds an entry in the English Guineas.

Bred by Shadwell Stud and now running in the colours of Mathieu Offenstadt, Makfi is out of the unraced Green Desert mare Dheelal, a half-sister to Alhaarth.
