New Approach on top at Goffs

Full sister to his unbeaten G1 winner Dawn Approach makes €775,000 on day one of the Orby Sale

A very strong first day’s trading at Goffs on 3 October saw last year’s top price of €350,000 eclipsed when a full sister to New Approach’s outstanding unbeaten G1 winner Dawn Approach was bought by Peter and Ross Doyle for €775,000.

The filly will go into training with her breeder Jim Bolger, who has prepared Dawn Approach for all five of his victories this season, his most recent being a four-and-three-quarter length romp in the G1 National Stakes. His next engagement is in the G1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket a week on Saturday.

Also on day one, fellow Darley stallion Teofilo had five yearlings sell for an average of over €117,000. He had two sell for €170,000 – Rathbarry Stud’s colt out of Black type producer My Personal Space who was bought by David Redvers, and the first foal out of Queen Of Lyons – a half-sister to G1 winner Benbaun, purchased from Lynn Lodge Stud by Gill Richardson.

Gill Richardson also bought a colt by Iffraaj, out of the winning Acclamation mare Luxie who is a half-sister to two Black type winners in Mister Manannan and Shermeen. Offered by Cooneen Stud, he was sold for €130,000.

There was also success for Raven's Pass, when Shadwell went to €240,000 to secure his only lot of the day – a filly out of Photophore, herself a half-sister to G1 winner Elusive Wave. She was consigned by Croom House Stud.

Exceed And Excel, like Teofilo, posted a six-figure average for the first day. His highest price was €125,000, paid by Kerri Radcliffe for Oaks Farm Stables’ colt out of Quinzey’s Best – herself a close relation of Exceed And Excel’s Group-winning daughter Mrs Kipling.

The sale continues today.
