Maldonado the latest successful runner for Rio de la Plata

Godolphin colt wins well at Epsom to become the latest winner for his first-season sire

Rio de la Plata colt Maldonado was sent off as odds-on favourite to take the seven-furlong maiden at Epsom on 8 September and he certainly didn’t disappoint as he won by almost two lengths.

Always prominent under Jim Crowley, Charlie Appleby’s charge began to quicken once entering the straight and despite hanging slightly close to home, kept on well to win by a length and three quarters.

Bred by Snowdrop Stud, Maldonado becomes the second winner from two foals to race out of Spanish Winner (Choisir), who is herself a half-sister to the dam of Manduro’s Group-winning daughter Trois Lunes.

Rio de la Plata is now sire of six individual winners, including multiple winner Aiming For Rio.
