Madhmoon returns to winning ways at Leopardstown

Dawn Approach’s Derby second lands G3 Desmond Stakes to stakes his Irish Champion claim

Madhmoon has been flying the flag for his sire Dawn Approach all season and on Thursday, 15 August, he added a well-deserved second Group victory to his record with an easy win in the G3 Desmond Stakes at Leopardstown.

Racing towards the rear of the field under Chris Hayes, the Kevin Prendergast-trained colt was ridden along two furlongs from home and soon moved to the front, easing to a length-and-a-half victory.

He will now head to the G1 Irish Champion Stakes, before a possible tilt at the English equivalent at Ascot.

Madhmoon is owned and bred by Shadwell and is out of the Group-placed Haafhd mare Aaraas, herself a half-sister to the dam of Cape Cross’s G1 Irish Guineas winner Awtaad.

Dawn Approach is also sire this year of Stakes-winning duo Dawn Passage and Diamond Thunder, plus a further four Black Type performers.
