In Italian’s front-running style translates to victory in Saratoga’s G1 Diana

Daughter of Dubawi sets new course record in earning her first G1 win

In Italian showed her heels to the rest of the field going gate-to-wire to win the G1 Diana Stakes by one-and-a-half lengths at Saratoga on Saturday, 16 July.

The four-year-old daughter of Dubawi led home a four-way sweep for trainer Chad Brown, who was also represented by Technical Analysis (second), Bleeker Street (third) and Rougir (by Territories). In Italian set a new course record at Saratoga, covering the mile-and-one-eighth on the turf in 1:45.06.

In Italian, who won the G3 Honey Fox Stakes earlier this year, broke alertly and was sent to the front immediately by jockey Joel Rosario. The chestnut filly proceeded to set swift fractions on the lead, going :22.45 and :45.83 through the first half-mile while remaining unchallenged. Stablemate Technical Analysis launched a bid turning for home, but In Italian repelled that challenge and pulled away in the stretch to win convincingly.

Bred in Great Britain by Fairway Thoroughbreds, In Italian was purchased by Mike Ryan for owner Peter Brant for 475,000 guineas from the Book 1 consignment of Hazelwood Bloodstock at the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. She is out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Florentina, winner of the G3 Gold Coast Guineas and second in the G2 Furious Stakes in Australia. Florentina, a half-sister to G1 WATC Railway Stakes winner, Gathering, is also the dam of G2-placed Villa Carlotta (by Street Cry) and Stakes-placed Fasano (by Lonhro).

In Italian became Dubawi's 51st worldwide Grade 1/Group 1 winner with her Diana victory. Dubawi is also the sire of 17 individual Group winners in 2022. In addition to In Italian, Dubawi is represented by G1 2,000 Guineas and G1 St. James’s Palace Stakes hero Coroebus, G1 French Guineas winner Modern Games and G1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner Naval Crown.
