Another Stakes race victory for son of Teofilo in Members’ Handicap at Doomben

Character returned to his best form and collected his third Stakes victory when he won the Listed Members’ Handicap over 1,600m at Doomben on Saturday, 13 May.

Winner of the G2 Tulloch Stakes and the G2 Queensland Guineas just over 12 months ago, the four-year-old son of super Irish stallion Teofilo and five-race winner Monogram (AUS) ran down Bigboyroy to score by a long neck. Santero finished third, another half-length away.

Jockey Ben Thompson rode a copybook race on the James Cummings-trained gelding, only leaving the fence in the final 300m to launch his charge.

The victory took Character’s record to five wins and five placings from 26 starts, for prize money and bonus earnings of $642,165.

Teofilo, unbeaten during a brief racing career in Ireland and England and has sired 23 G1 winners - including Melbourne Cup champs Cross Counter and Twilight Payment, Exultant, Happy Clapper, Humidor, Kermadec, Valentino and Ascot Gold Cup winner Subjectivist.

The stallion has sired 744 winners of 2123 races worldwide, with 110 individual Stakes-race winners of 219 Black-Type races.
