First southern hemisphere foal for Teofilo

Colt by the undefeated European Champion two-year-old arrives on August 10

The bay colt was born at Darley Woodlands on August 10 and is the fifth foal from the Listed Widden Stakes-winning Strategic mare Riona. A half-sister to the G1 Doncaster Handicap winner Over, (who is famed for defeating Champion mare Sunline), Riona comes from the family of Stakes-performers Youth (Quest For Fame), Veteran (Canny Lad), Tuileries and Stamp.

The foal was described by Darley Woodlands General Manager John Sunderland as being, “nice and neat, with a strong top line and having good bone.”

Retiring to stud as an unbeaten European Champion two-year-old whose victories included the G1 Dewhurst Stakes and G1 National Stakes, where both times he defeated Holy Roman Emperor, Teofilo covered his first southern hemisphere book of mares last season which included G1 winners Tully Thunder and Not Related; the dams of G1 winners Regimental Gal and Blackbean, along with siblings to G1 winners Ambulance, Sports, Curata Storm, Medaaly, Crawl, Flavour, Planet Ruler and Crawl.

Only a few hours after the birth of the Teofilo (pictured) colt, fellow European Champion two-year-old New Approach was represented by his second foal of the season. Also born at Darley Woodlands, the bay colt is the first foal of the Stakes-performed Encosta de Lago mare Cajou.

From three generations of Stakes-performed mares, the colt comes from the family of Stakes-performers Anacarde, Seattle Gem, How About That and Zamazaan Lass.

An unbeaten dual G1-winning juvenile like Teofilo, New Approach went on to secure the G1 Epsom Derby, G1 Irish Champion Stakes and Newmarket's G1 Champion Stakes, in the latter, bettering Newmarket’s 24-year-old course record. In winning by six lengths, it assured the colt was also named the European Champion three-year-old to add to his two-year-old title.

Teofilo will stand the upcoming breeding season at Darley Kelvinside at a fee of $22,000 including GST, while New Approach will cover his second book of mares at Northwood Park at a fee of $33,000 including GST.
