Dubawi’s August just keeps getting better and better and on Wednesday he added an astounding fifth Black Type winner inside a week when Old Persian ran out the gutsy winner of the G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes on the opening day of York’s Ebor meeting, narrowly bearting Cross Counter (Teofilo).
Both Godolphin runners tracked the early leaders before asked to quicken a furlong from home. They saw out the mile-and-a-half trip superbly, battling all the way to the line where Old Persian prevailed by a head.
Old Persian now has six victories to his name, including this year’s G2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. He will now be aimed at the G1 St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday, 15 September.
He is out of Indian Petal (Singspiel), a full sister to Ribblesdale Stakes winner Silkwood and from the family of the great Miesque.
Old Persian becomes the second winner of the race for Dubawi, after Postponed’s victory four years ago. He of course went on to record four wins at G1 level and now stands alongside his sire at Dalham Hall Stud.
