A Cross that works

From G1 Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter to the best sprinter of her age and sex, Tantheem, it’s been quite a year for Teofilo

Cross Counter’s history-making win in last week’s G1 Melbourne Cup was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year for his sire Teofilo, but is by no means the only 2018 success story for the Kildangan Stud stalwart.

Teofilo has sired an impressive 15 individual Black Type winners in Europe this season, a figure that can only be bettered by his own sire Galileo, Dubawi and Invincible Spirit – no mean feat. Another impressive stat is Teofilo’s 10% Stakes winners to runners, considered by those in the know as the mark of a truly exceptional stallion.

One of Teofilo’s 2018 Group winners is smart sprinter Tantheem, assessed as the best speedster of her age and sex, and rated the equal of multiple G1 winner Laurens.

Teofilo has also been responsible for two Group-winning juveniles in the past fortnight, firstly in Guaranteed, who ran out the gutsy winner of the Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown. The race has a good record in producing horses who go on to bigger and better things so Guaranteed will certainly be one to look out for next spring.

The following week, two-year-old filly Donjah retained her unbeaten record in tremendous style, winning a German G3 contest by no fewer than six lengths.

Teofilo is also sire this year of G1-winning duo Happy Clapper and Humidor, multiple Group winner and G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks third Eziyra, plus G2 winner Diplomat.

Teofilo stands at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €40,000, Oct 1, SLF. If you are interested in sending your mare to him in 2019, contact the nominations team on +353 (0)45 527600.
