Lockheed

Well-bred juvenile earns tilt at G3 Acomb Stakes with smart maiden victory

Exceed And Excel enjoyed an exciting Glorious Goodwood with his two-year-old son Yalta breaking the course record, and Lockheed added to his sire's record with an eye-catching win in the 7f maiden on Saturday.

Having been second on debut at Ascot three weeks earlier, Lockheed showed plenty of promise in Saturday's race. Having been trapped behind a wall of horses entering the straight he managed to get into the clear with over a furlong to run and came home well to win by half a length. Trainer William Haggas nominated the G3 Acomb Stakes at York as a target and the colt also holds entries in the G1 National Stakes and G2 Champagne Stakes, both in September.

Lockheed is out of Clinical, who scored a hat-trick of Listed victories at three before landing the G3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes on debut at four. From a typically strong Cheveley Park Stud family, she is a half-sister to the G3 winner's Cupid's Glory and three Listed winners in Courting, Prescription and Magnificence.
