Dawn Approach sparkles at Cartier Awards

Outstanding son of New Approach named Champion two-year-old colt

Dawn Approach could hardly have enjoyed a more perfect season, ensuring his sire New Approach was crowned Champion first-season sire following an unbeaten run of six races that included two G1s.

On 13 November, he added another win to his impressive record when he was named Champion two-year-old colt at the prestigious Cartier Awards, held at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

The Godolphin colt, who is trained by Jim Bolger, was his sire’s first ever runner and first ever winner when winning Ireland’s first juvenile race of the year back in March. He returned to the racecourse in May where he began to make his presence felt, winning at Naas by five and a half lengths before successfully stepping up in class at the same course to take the Listed Rochestown Stakes.

Crossing the Irish Sea for the first time for Ascot’s Royal Meeting, Dawn Approach kicked off an outstanding week for his sire with a determined win in the G2 Coventry Stakes. Following the subsequent victories of Newfangled and Tha’Ir, New Approach became the first ever freshman to sire three juvenile Stakes winners at the time-honoured meeting.

Making his G1 debut in the National Stakes in September, Dawn Approach certainly did not disappoint, taking the race by almost five lengths. He then emulated his sire, winning the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in scintillating fashion and by yet another wide margin.

New Approach, who stands at Dalham Hall Stud, has sired three Black type winners to date, plus Rasmeyaa – the filly who was Listed-placed on her debut and followed this up with a five-and-a-half-length victory at Leopardstown. His fee for the 2013 season is £50,000 October 1st Special live foal.
