Wootton Bassett storms to victory in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere

First-season sire sensation Iffraaj records his first G1 winner when his outstanding son makes it five wins from five

Iffraaj, one of the most successful first-season sires ever - having sired no fewer than 31 first-crop winners to date, celebrated his first G1 winner on 3 October when his son Wootton Bassett maintained his unbeaten record in sensational style, landing the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Arc day at Longchamp.

Sent straight to the front under Paul Hanagan, Wootton Bassett made light work of the heavy going and was never challenged, drawing clear of his rivals in the home straight to win by two and a half lengths. He provided both his jockey and trainer Richard Fahey with their first winner at G1 level.

He is now unbeaten in five starts and has amassed over half a million pounds in prize money.

Bred by Laundry Cottage Stud, Wootton Bassett is out of the Stakes-placed Primo Dominie mare Balladonia and is from the family of G1 winners Silver Patriarch and Papineau.

Iffraaj – one of just six stallions to have sired 30 or more juvenile winners from his first crop – is just four winners away from Invincible Spirit’s all-time record of 35 winners in his first season.
