The sweet smell of success

Shamardal becomes Australia’s joint leading first season sire when Faint Perfume becomes his eighth individual winner

Darley’s first-season sire Shamardal moved to the top of the first-season sires’ table by number of winners on 17 June when his daughter Faint Perfume recorded an impressive win at Warwick Farm.

The Bart Cummings-trained filly was settled towards the rear of the field and clearly appreciating the step up in trip to 1400m, flew home inside the final furlong to win by two-and-a-half lengths.

Bred by Wynyarra Stud, Faint Perfume is the first foal from the Zabeel mare Zona, herself a daughter of Champion filly and dual G1 winner Danendri and a full sister to G3 winner Zingham.

Shamardal’s eight winners from his first Australian crop include G2-placed filly Marquardt and the Listed-placed Premardal. He has also made a promising start with his first northern hemisphere crop, siring two winners to date including recent eight-length winner Below Zero.
