Strong start to Craven breeze-up

Darley-sired quartet among the most desirable two-year-olds on offer

The Darley sires were to the fore on the opening night of the Craven breeze-up sale at Tattersalls, accounting for four of the top ten lots of the session and the top-priced filly.

A daughter of last year’s leading first-season sire Iffraaj was the most sought after among the females and sold for the third highest price if the day. Consigned by Yeomanstown Stud in Ireland, the filly is out of Tamora, a half-sister to crack sprinters Gilt Edge Girl and Godfrey Street, and will race in England after being purchased by Angie Loder for 200,000gns.

Also fetching 200,000gns was lot 70, a Dubawi half-brother to Shamardal’s Classic hope Dubai Prince and from the family of Darley Japan stallion Storming Home.

Bernardini had a tremendous first season with his runners last year and a colt by the Darley America stallion is now heading to the stable of Brian Meehan, who also trains his Group Three-winning daughter Theyskens’ Theory, after being bought by Hugo Merry for 195,000gns.

A colt by Cape Cross out of the Danetime mare Miss Sally was another to impress breeze-watchers on Tuesday, and he contributed to a good night for Willie Bronwne’s Mocklershill operation when selling for 155,000gns.

A second Dubawi colt also fetched a six figure sum when lot 36, out of the Barathea mare Piece Unique, sold for 100,000gns to Anthony Stroud, to give Dubawi an average of 107,333gns for the first session.
