Son of Shamardal breaks two-year-old track record at Royal Ascot

Pinatubo erupts in Chesham Stakes to remain unbeaten in fantastic style

The final day of Ascot’s 2019 Royal meeting got off to a flying start for the Darley stallions when smart Shamardal colt Pinatubo made it three from three in the Listed Chesham Stakes, smashing the two-year-old track record in the process.

Settled off the early pace in the centre group under James Doyle, Charlie Appleby’s charge was asked to quicken two furlongs out and could not have been more impressive, storming to an unassailable lead and eventually winning by three and a quarter lengths.

Pinatubo broke his maiden by the same margin on Friday, 10 May, before following up three weeks later with a convincing win in the Woodcote Stakes on Oaks day at Epsom.

Pinatubo is out of the Listed-winning Dalakhani mare Lava Flow, who has a 2019 filly by Teofilo.

This is the second Royal Ascot winner this week for Shamardal, following Blue Point’s outstanding victory in Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes.
