Shamardal’s Pinatubo the cream of his crop at Goodwood

Smart juvenile remains unbeaten in four starts with four-length victory in G2 Vintage Stakes

Shamardal’s banner year continued on Tuesday, 30 July when his exciting two-year-old son Pinatubo ran out the impressive winner of the G2 Vintage Stakes on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood.

Stalking the early pace under James Doyle, Pinatubo cruised to the front approaching the two-furlong marker and once asked for his effort, demonstrated a superb turn of foot to move clear of his rivals and eventually win by four lengths.

This was the race Shamardal himself won back in 2004, before winning the G1 Darley Dewhurst, the French 2,000 Guineas and Derby, plus the G1 St James’s Palace Stakes.

This was the fourth victory in as many career starts for Charlie Appleby’s charge, after he broke his maiden by a wide margin back in May, before taking the Woodcote Stakes on Oaks day at Epsom then landing the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot on his previous start.

Pinatubo is out of the Stakes-winning Dalakhani mare Lava Flow, who has a 2019 filly foal by Teofilo.

Shamardal is sire of 14 individual Stakes winners so far this year, headed by Royal Ascot hero and new Darley stallion, Blue Point, plus G1 French 1,000 Guineas winner Castle Lady.
