Rebel Raider romps to second Derby win

Son of Reset takes G1 SA Derby by four lengths at Morphettville; Shamardal records his seventh winner

Rebel Raider, three-year-old son of Darley stallion Reset, took his second Derby in fantastic style on 2 May with a four length victory in the G1 South Australia Derby at Morphettville.

Trapped wide early, the Leon Macdonald-trained colt took up the running under Clare Lindop (who incidentally became the first female jockey to land this race) and was never seriously challenged, turning for home clear of the field and extending his lead in the straight to win by an impressive four lengths.

Rebel Raider (pictured) becomes the first horse since 1977 to complete the Victoria-South Australia Derby double and will now enjoy a well-deserved break before being aimed at the Melbourne Cup.

Also at Morphettville, first-season sire Shamardal recorded his seventh individual winner when Wallinger obliged at the second time of asking in the 1050m Handicap. Tracking the leader in second, Wallinger took lead at top of straight and eased away to win by just under three lengths.

Shamardal has sired three winners in the past three days, following his outstanding double on Thursday when he notched up two new winners inside an hour.

Meanwhile, Commanding Hope (Commands) took third behind Takeover Target in the G1 Goodwood, also at Morphettville. Lonhro took his number of Black type performers to 13 courtesy of two horses owned by Sheikh Mohammed, when his daughter Trim finished second in the Listed Ken Memorial Classic at Gold Coast and Demerit took the same slot in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield.
