New juvenile Stakes winner for Kheleyf

Penny’s Picnic remains unbeaten in the Listed Prix la Fleche

Kheleyf’s impressive juvenile colt Penny’s Picnic maintained his unbeaten record on Friday June 8, when making all the running in the Listed Prix la Fleche over 1000m at Maisons-Laffitte.

Going into the race the hot favourite after two facile victories by a combined 18 lengths, he was quickly away from the stalls and only had to be nudged out to the line to win cosily by three-quarters-of-a-length.

The 2008 renewal of the Prix la Fleche saw Kheleyf record his first ever Stakes winner through speedy filly Percolator, who like today’s winner, flew out of the stalls to make all the running. A race synonymous for producing quality winners, previous stars include Hector Protector, Arazi, Noverre and Natagora.

Bred by F Montauban and sold for €30,000 as a yearling, Penny’s Picnic is the first foal out of the Kingmambo mare Zerky, a full-sister to the multiple Group winner Penny’s Gold and a granddaughter of the Champion Mrs Penny. Zerky also has a full-sister yearling to Penny’s Picnic and is in foal this season to Iffraaj.

Kheleyf is renowned for siring speedy juveniles, and since 2008 he has recorded 116 individual winners at that age, a feat that only Oasis Dream can beat among all British stallions.
