Moohaajim dominates in the Mill Reef

Son of Cape Cross enters the Guineas picture with a convincing G2 victory at Newbury

Cape Cross’s two-year-old son Moohaajim recorded his first Group win in tremendous style on 22 September, dominating his rivals to run out the easy winner of the G2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury.

The Marco Botti-trained colt was held up during the early stages of the six-furlong contest and was always travelling well and despite having to weave between horses, quickened superbly once he found racing room and soon moved clear to win by a length and a quarter from Master Of War.

Moohaajim won on his racecourse debut at Ascot in July, before finishing a creditable fifth in the G1 Darley Prix Morny last month. He is now likely to step up in class again, with the G1 Middle Park or G1 Dewhurst cited as his next possible targets. His victory today has earned him quotes of around 20-1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.

Bred by Castlemartin Sky and Skymarc Farm, Moohaajim is the first foal to race out of the winning Kingmambo mare Thiella, herself a daughter of G3 winner and G1-placed Theoretically.

Cape Cross is now sire of 40 Group winners worldwide, including no fewer than nine at G1 level. This year he has sired 16 Black type performers, including G1 filly Joviality and Vintage Stakes third Luhaif.
