Jon Snow crowned G1 Australian Derby hero

Son of Iffraaj adds his first win at the highest level in thrilling fashion

Iffraaj has been enjoying a tremendous spell of success in the southern hemisphere and on 1 April, his talented son Jon Snow became his eighth winner at the highest level when flying home to record a stunning victory in the G1 Australian Derby at Royal Randwick.

Jumping well from an outside stall, the three-year-old colt moved to the inside and travelled well in second position for much of the race. Asked for his effort approaching the three-furlong marker, Jon Snow laid down a tremendous challenge to outbattle Harper’s Choice (Street Cry) close to home and took the 12-furlong contest by just under a length.

Bred by R W E Moore, Jon Snow is out of the winning O’Reilly mare Orinda, a half-sister to Group winner Ubiquitous.

Jon Snow is one of 22 individual Group winners for his sire Iffraaj, also sire of fellow G1 winners Ribchester, RizeenaChriselliam, Turn Me Loose, Benvenue and Wootton Bassett as well as recent G1 New Zealand Derby and G1 Rosehill Guineas hero Gingernuts.

Iffraaj stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £27,500 October 1st SLF.
