Irish 2,000 triumph for New Approach

Mac Swiney defeats Poetic Flare at the Curragh

New Approach dominated the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas on Saturday, 22 May when his son Mac Swiney defeated his grandson Poetic Flare (Dawn Approach) in a driving finish. Sent straight to front under jockey Rory Cleary, Mac Swiney made full use of his stamina in the heavy conditions to repel the English 2,000 Guineas hero Poetic Flare by a short head.

Mac Swiney was winning his third Group race after taking the G1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster and the G2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh as a juvenile. He will now head to Epsom for the Derby in a bid to emulate his paternal half-brother Masar.

A Jim Bolger homebred, Mac Swiney is out of the Teofilo mare Halla Na Saoire, who is a full sister to G1 Irish Derby third Light Heavy and a half-sister to Halla Siama, who is herself the dam of Teofilo’s G1 Dewhurst Stakes hero Parish Hall.

New Approach has sired nine top-flight winners including Masar, Champion juvenile Dawn Approach, Oaks heroine Talent and Cascadian, winner of the G1 Doncaster Handicap earlier this year.
