Hartani takes the Curragh Cup

Son of Shirocco enters the St Leger picture with a five-and-a-half-length G3 win

Shirocco’s three-year-old son Hartani notched his third consecutive win in superb style on 1 July when cruising to victory in the G3 Curragh Cup.

Settled just behind the early leaders under Johnny Murtagh, Hartani was asked to quicken once approaching the final bend and eased clear of the field, running on brilliantly to win by five and a half lengths.

Having won his two previous starts and according to his trainer, still progressing, John Oxx’s charge is now likely to step up in class again with the English or Irish St Leger cited as possible targets.

Owned and bred by HH The Aga Khan, Hartani is out of the Darshaan mare Harsiya, who is half-sister to Group winner Harghar.

Shirocco is enjoying a successful season so far, having sired four individual Stakes winners including Brown Panther (second in last year’s St Leger and a possible for this year’s Irish contest), plus Oaks second Shirocco Star and fellow Group horse Ibicenco.
