Guineas glory for Sea The Stars

Son of Cape Cross storms to Classic victory on the Rowley Mile

Sea The Stars provided Darley stallion Cape Cross with his second Classic winner and installed himself as favourite for the Derby with an outstanding victory in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on 2 May.

Always travelling well under Mick Kinane, the John Oxx-trained colt quickened brilliantly into the Dip and saw off the 3-1 favourite Delegator, going away at the finish to win by a length and a half.

That he is now being touted as the potential Derby winner should come as no surprise as the impeccably-bred colt is out of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea, dam of no fewer than eight Stakes winners including Galileo and Black Sam Bellamy. Urban Sea is also a half-sister to fellow Darley stallion King's Best.

Cape Cross's first Classic winner was of course the great Ouija Board, who won both the English and Irish Oaks. The current leading sire in Europe, he is now sire of seven individual G1 winners and a further 22 Group winners. He stands at Darley's Kildangan Stud in Ireland.
