Double delight for Shamardal

Freshman sire boasts 31.5 per cent winning strike rate after two winners within an hour

Shamardal celebrated the fifth and sixth winners from his first Australian crop on Thursday when Crash’m and Shamoline Warrior obliged within an hour of each other, both scoring on debut.

Hailing from the successful Mark Kavanagh stable, home to Street Cry's Caulfield Guineas winner Whobegotyou, Shamoline Warrior has a hard act to follow as he is a half-brother to Reset's VRC Derby winner Rebel Raider, who is a strong fancy for the G1 SAJC Derby on Saturday. But the son of Picholine (Dehere), bred by Toorak Park Stud Pty Ltd, overcame his wide draw to win Sale’s 1200m maiden after a definitive late burst of speed.

Speaking after the race, winning jockey Michael Rodd said: 'From the 800m he was travelling very well and when we straightened he just needed even luck...he's got quite a big future I think.'

At Wyong, Crash’m took the shorter option of the 1000m juvenile maiden, running out the easy length-and-a-half winner for her owner/breeder Meringo Stud. Her dam Ms Gatecrasher (Mr Henrysee) is a full-sister to the multiple Group-winning sprinter Mr Innocent and dual Listed winner Verdict Declared.

Shamardal has now sired six winners from 19 runners this campaign, giving him a winners to runners percentage of 31.5. Among his successful two-year-olds are the G2 Magic Night Stakes runner-up Marquardt and Listed-placed Premardal.
