Doctor Zhivago continues Shamardal’s winning ways

Darley’s Champion first-season sire elect increases his winners’ total to 23; Tiger Hill’s Young Tiger notches his fifth Black type win

First-season sire Shamardal continued to add to his winners’ tally late into the year when Doctor Zhivago made a successful racecourse debut at Southwell on 5 December.

Always in touch, the Mark Johnston-trained colt was ridden along at the halfway point of the one-mile contest and overcoming early signs of greenness, ran on well close to home to win by two clear lengths.

Bred by Meon Valley Stud, this smartly-bred colt is out of the Stakes-winning Sadler’s Wells mare Balalaika – also dam of Green Desert’s G2 winner Alkhaadem. Balalaika is a full sister to multiple Group winner Stagecraft and is a granddaughter of Reprocolor.

Shamardal, Europe’s Champion first-season sire elect, is also sire of Group winners Shakespearean and Arctic and recently sired his first G1 winner when Faint Perfume landed the VRC Oaks in Australia. Shamardal stands at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €20,000 October 1st Special live foal.

A day later, Tiger Hill's wonderfully consistent son Young Tiger recorded his fifth Black type victory, landing the Listed Prix Max Sicard at Toulouse.

Tiger Hill is sire of seven Black type performers this year, including the G3-winning, G1-placed Toughness Danon. He stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £8,000 October 1st Special live foal.
