Dazzling dozen for Shamardal

Darley's promising young stallion is co-leading first-season sire in Australia

This season’s race to be Australia’s leading first-season sire has been thrilling to say the least and with less than a week to go, Shamardal once again moved to the head of the list by number of winners (alongside Not A Single Doubt) when Captain Sonador took the Trilby Misso Handicap at Doomben.

At the rear of the field coming into the turn, the Roger Milne-trained colt accelerated impressively during the closing stages to reel in early leader Startling Pleasure and take the 1350m contest by a short neck.

Bred by Mill Park, Captain Sonador is the first foal from the winning Kenny’s Best Pal mare Pushing Daisies. She is herself a half-sister to multiple G2 winner and proven Stakes producer, Umaline.

Shamardal has now sired twelve individual winners from his first southern hemisphere crop, including G2 placegetter Marquardt and fellow Black type performer Premardal.
