Cavalryman takes charge in Grand Cup raid

Fourth stakes victory for Halling’s old favourite

Six-year-old Halling entire Cavalryman was back to winning ways at York on Saturday where he scored a two-length victory over fellow Darley-bred Calico Cat in the Listed Grand Cup, with Dubawi’s Gulf Of Naples taking third place in the 1m6f contest.

Cavalryman, a son of the Highest Honor mare Silversword, started his racing career in France, where he was trained by Andre Fabre to win the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G2 Prix Greffulhe as a three-year-old in 2009. He also finished third in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe that year before switching to the Godolphin stable of Saeed Bin Suroor, for whom he has twice been placed at the highest level.

His sire Halling stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £10,000 and is also responsible for the Group One winner Cutlass Bay and fellow top-class performers Norse Dancer, Opinion Poll, Coastal Path and Vanderlin among his 44 stakes winners.
