Cavalryman charges to Group One glory

Halling colt lands Grand Prix de Paris as Mastery takes third and Cape Cross sires a Listed-winning two-year-old on the same card.

Sheikh Mohammed’s Cavalryman galloped to an impressive win in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp to provide the highlight of what has already been a highly successful season for his sire Halling.

The progressive three-year-old finished runner-up to his paternal half-brother Cutlass Bay in the G2 Prix Greffulhe earlier in the season before coming back to take the Listed Prix Matchem by six lengths. Cavalryman is a Darley homebred out of the Highest Honor mare Silversword.

Among Halling’s other black-type performers this year are the G3 Queen’s Vase winner Holberg, G1 Gran Premio di Milano runner-up Age Of Reason, high-class stayer Coastal Path and Listed winner Renowing.

Mastery, a first-crop son of Sulamani who won the Derby Italiano for Godolphin, continued his excellent season when running on strongly for third place.

Earlier on the card, another Darley-bred colt, the two-year-old Colonial, gained his first black type in some style when winning the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure by two-and-a-half lengths. Colonial is a son of the leading sire in Britain and Ireland, Cape Cross, out of the Mr Prospector mare Elizabeth Bay and he has now won two of his three starts.
