Brown Panther roars again

Shirocco colt bounces back in style, winning the Pontefract Castle Stakes by seven lengths

Brown Panther, who rounded off a successful three-year-old campaign last year with a second in the St Leger, returned to winning ways in magnificent style on Sunday when landing the Listed Pontefract Castle Stakes by no fewer than seven lengths.

Settled in second position under Kieron Fallon, the Tom Dascombe-trained colt readily moved clear of the field once entering the straight and galloped home strongly to record a wide-margin victory.

Brown Panther won his only start at two, and recorded three straight wins at three before placing a creditable fifth in the G1 Deutsches Derby and placing in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes and St Leger.

Owned and bred by Michael Owen’s Owen Promotions Limited, Brown Panther is out of the Listed winner and multiple Group placer Treble Heights (Unfuwain). The mare has a two-year-old colt by Manduro and a yearling full brother to Brown Panther.

Shirocco has now sired three Stakes winners and a further four Stakes performers this year, including Oaks second Shirocco Star, who put up another gutsy performance to take third in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot last week.
