Balthazaar's Gift strikes again

Tough Xaar sprinter back for fifth win in Windsor Listed race in which Bertolini's son Prime Defender finishes third

Balthazaar’s Gift won the fourth stakes race of his career when landing a six-furlong Listed event at Windsor on Monday evening.

The powerful five-year-old son of Xaar streaked to the front close home to see off Lipocco, with Prime Defender, by Bertolini, less than a length adrift in third.

Bred in Ireland by Pat Beirne, Balthazaar’s Gift has proved himself to be a tough campaigner, winning three races at two, including the G2 Criterium Maisons-Laffitte when trained by Kevin Ryan. The following season, he was runner-up to Les Arcs in the G1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, finishing just a quarter of a length behind the winner. He was G1-placed again last year when third behind Cartier Award winner Red Clubs (Red Ransom) in the Haydock Sprint Cup.

A return to Royal Ascot is now on the cards and his current trainer Luca Cumani has him entered in the G1 Golden Jubilee and the Wokingham Stakes. He also holds an entry for the G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket on 11 July.

Xaar , who is also sire of Group winners Wake Up Maggie and Acey Ducey, stands for Darley in Japan.
