Another G1 for Exceed And Excel thanks to September Run

Star filly runs away with Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington

The enduring prowess of Exceed And Excel received yet another boost with the storming win of September Run in Saturday’s G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.

Already one of Australia’s best sprinting three-year-olds, September Run outclassed and overpowered her opposition, scoring by a length and three-quarters from Swats That with Wild Ruler a similar distance away in third place.

Drawn on the grandstand side of Flemington’s straight 1,200m course, in a race renowned for establishing the benchmark for each generation of young sprinters, September Run was given plenty of time to find her rhythm by jockey Craig Williams.

The pair swooped on the lead at the 200m with a perfectly-timed run that sealed a performance Williams described as “faultless”.

“She’s so reliable, you know she’s going to give you something whenever you ask,” Williams said.

“There wasn’t a moment of anxiety out there today, she had them covered a long way out.”

Already one of Exceed And Excel’s 177 Stakes winners thanks to three Listed victories, September Run becomes her sire’s 16th G1 star.

September Run, who was bred by Alpara Lodge, is the first foal of the Street Cry mare Pittsburgh Flyer, herself a G3 winner at Flemington’s Melbourne Cup meeting in 2015.

That was one of three wins for Pittsburgh Flyer who is out of the South African G2 winner Warning Zone.

Exceed And Excel, who until this year had shuttled to the northern hemisphere, is standing the Australian breeding season at Kelviniside, NSW, at a service fee of AU$132,000, including GST
