Able One takes the Hong Kong Mile

Cape Cross’ veteran lands his third top-level triumph

Making his 41st career start as a nine-year-old, Able One, a son of Cape Cross, landed the big mile contest at Sha Tin on Sunday December 11, the Hong Kong Mile. Taking his career tally of victories to 11, he has now won seven Stakes races including twice landing the G1 Champions’ Mile over today’s course and distance in 2007 and 2010.

Sitting in second most of the way before going clear with a furlong to run, he held on well to beat Cityscape with Xtension (Xaar) back in third.

Bred in New Zealand by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, Able One is out of the Danehill mare Gardenia, who is also dam of another Stakes winner by Cape Cross in Florilegium. They are from the family of Rebel Raider, Reset’s Victoria Derby winner, and Shamoline Warrior – a Group-winning son of Shamardal.

Standing this season at Kildangan Stud for €35,000 Oct 1, SLF, Cape Cross has again been enjoying an excellent 2011. He has sired the first filly ever to win a UAE Derby, a juvenile G1-scorer and had a yearling sales average of €118,000. Adding value to the mares he covers, they have recently been sold in-foal to him for up to 450,000Gns at Tattersalls and €520,000 at Arqana Breeding stock sales. Eight mares were sold in foal to him and produced an average of €209,000.
