Star sprinter Flamberge takes the G1 William Reid Stakes

Son of Exceed And Excel adds a third top-flight win to his record

Exceed And Excel, a Champion sprinter himself, is renowned for passing on his speed to his offspring and on 24 March his son Flamberge cememted his position as one of his sire's top speedsters when landing the G1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley in Australia.

Stalking the early pace set by Godolphin colt Holler (who is by late Darley stallion Commands), Flamberge sat in prime position on the rail as the field turned for home and flying down the home straight, he prevailed in a thrilling finish to win by a short head.

This was the third G1 victory for the six-year-old and his second straight win at the highest level, having landed the G1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield on his last start. He also won the G1 Darley Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville last May.

Bred by Mr D Moodie, Flamberge is out of the Group-winning mare Razor Blade, dam of another smart sprinter by Exceed And Excel in Curtana – a multiple Stakes-winning filly who was second in the G1 Ascot Vale Stakes. Razor Blade, dam of five Black type performers in total, is also grandma of New Approach’s Group-winning daughter Sword Of Light

Exceed And Excel, who stands at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €40,000 October 1st SLF, has sired 12 Black type performers so far this year. Last year, he was represented by no fewer than 26 individual Stakes winners, including Coventry Stakes winner and G1 Middle Park Stakes second Buratino.
